St Blaise

In honour of St Blaise, the Church today blesses throats as a holy prevention against diseases of the throat.

St. Blaise was a physician and Bishop of Sebaste, Armenia. He was beheaded in 317 A.D. under the rule of Licinius. St. Blaise is the Patron Saint of Sore Throats, because he healed a boy who was choking on a fishbone. A lot of fiction crept into Blaise's biographical details. It suffices to say that he is seen as one more example of the power of those who have given themselves entirely to Jesus.
