St Rose of Lima

Information

St. Rose was born in Lima, Peru, and became the first Saint of the Americas. Her baptismal name was Isabel, but she was such a beautiful baby that she was called Rose, and that name remained. As she grew older, she became more and more beautiful. One day, her mother put a wreath of flowers on her head to show off her loveliness to friends. Rose was less impressed with this and, it is said, she took a vow of virginity at 5 years of age. She modelled her life on that of St. Catherine of Sienna. When she was 15 years old she received the habit of the Third Order of St. Dominic, and for 16 years lived a life of mortification and penance. She died in 1617. Many miracles followed her death. She was beatified by Clement IX, in 1667, and canonized in 1671 by Clement X. She is the Patron Saint of Florists, Gardeners, of the Philippines and South America.
