Science in our School On November 11th 2008 we went on a trip to Armagh Planetarium, which was part of our Pride of Place prize. 1st class to 6th class went on this trip. We arranged to go on this week as we incorporated Science Week which was 9th November - 16th November. To help us with our science curriculum we entered a competition to make an owl habitat on RTE's 'The Late Late Show'. We decided to enter as the prize was a huge €10,000 that would go a long way with our fundraising. All the children were asked to put their ideas on paper for where they thought an owl would like to live. All parents and local community were involved and asked to send in their ideas too. Some great ideas came back and we set to make models. Have a look at the photos below to see how we got on.
These were the finished owl boxes. See below.
We did not win first prize but we did get an oil painting on canvas of an owl by RTE's Don Conroy which we have on display in the hall. We have put the owl boxes up in the woodland area where we have many other habitat boxes. We hope an owl or two will take up residence in Rathkenny over the next year or so. We love to watch all the birds coming and going from their boxes. ________________________________________________ In September 2007 we went on a visit to W5 in Belfast. This helped us with our Discover Primary Science project which we started shortly after this trip. See photos below!
