Pupil's Work

The day before the Final
By Tom & Caolach

It was the day before the school football final and the whole school was very excited about it and also very busy. We started by getting the gutters cleaned. This was followed by decorating the windows with posters we made. Siobhan and Susan put up the bunting at the front of the school. At eleven o clock Rathkenny player and new Meath selector Donal Curtis raised our new Rathkenny flag. 3rd and 4th classes cleaned out the window boxes and we planted panseys, primroses and polyanthus in them. Siobhan came in and gave us a team talk at two. At half two we got our jerseys and Miss Coogan broke the handle by accident but we got it fixed in no time. At three o clock we went home very excited.

A Book Review

The Iron Man Summary

By Caolach Halligan

Setting: the settings for this story are a sea side cliff, the countryside and Australia .

Characters: the main characters are The Iron Man, Hogarth and the Space Bat Angel Dragon.

Problem: in the story there are two problems. No.1 the Iron Man won’t stop eating all the farmers’ machinery.

Resolution: No.1 the farmers first tried to trap the Iron Man in a big hole. But the Iron Man escaped, so the farmers led the Iron Man to a scrapyard in the town.No.2 The Iron Man challenged the Space Bat Angel Dragon to a test of strength, and won.

Favorite Part: my favorite part of the story was when the Iron Man set himself on fire.

Least Favourite Part: was when the Space Bat Angel Dragon was coming closer and closer to the earth.

So I think I might give this book the thumbs up.

History Projects

The school had a ceili in March in Rathkenny Hall. It was a huge success and might just become an annual event. In preparation for the ceili and in conjunction with Seachtain na Gaeilge the children did some irish projects. Here are some of the pupil's work.

Tree Day Trip

On Wednesday 8th October we went on a day trip to Dalgan Park to celebrate Tree day. We left our school bags at home and learned lots about trees in a fun and relaxed way. Ger Clarke an ecologist from Dalgan Park gave us a guided tour of the woodland and we did some microscope work also. We finished the day with a tour of the Hill of Tara. See Trips for Photos. Please see below for some essays and poems we did on Trees.

National Tree Day

Yesterday we left our school at 9.40am for Dalgan Park. When we got there we met up wirth our guide Ger Clarke. First we went for a walk in the woodlands. We brought plastic bags for our findings. We found old leaves and conquers and bits and bobs. We saw trees from eight different countries ranging from 12 to 250 years of age. After the walk we had lunch and used a microscope. We saw a nettle, a butterfly and a flower. After lunch we headed back to the bus and set off to The Hill Of Tara. There we learned about ring forts, legends and burial tombs. I thought the burial tombs and the torcs were the best. At 5 past 2 we arrived home much to our delight. I really learned alot of new things like that the Lime Tree is the best absorber of CO2. Holly isn't prickly on the top because there are no tall animals to eat the top. Another interesting thing is how plants and trees make their own food. The root does the shopping of water and nutrients and the leaf is like a cooker. It uses solar power to feed the plant. the process is called photosynthesis. It's very fascinating!

National Tree Day

We all came to school yesterday morni g happy and excited. We were excited because we were going to Dalgan Park to celebrate National Tree Day. The bus arrived right on time. We all got on the bus and sat down. The bus set off. When we got there we all got off the bus and went inside to meet Ger Clarke our guide. He showed us his piranha and a wren's nest. He brought us to a room to put our bags away. We all went putside for a walk in the woods. We had to bring notebooks, pencils and plastic bags to collect leaves. Then we saw two squirrels running up a tree, a robin, crows, trees, puff ball fungus, moss, leaves and lichens. We found chestnuts and acorns. Then we went inside to have some lunch and we saw a butterfly through a microscope. Next we left to go to the Hill of Tara. The hill was very steep. We saw the graveyard and the church. Ger Clarke told us about Louis the legend when he found the gold. Then we all went back to school. We arrived there at 2 o'clock. I thought it was very good and I would love to go again.

National Tree Day

On October 8th 2008 we visited Dalgan Park. We went on a bus and we left at 9.40am. When we got there we were guided by Ger Clarke. He showed us some bird's nests. Later he guided us into a big room and told us to leave our bags inside. Soon we went outside and he brought us into the woods and showed us some new trees that we had never heard of before. Then David Farrelly who is twelve years old stood up beside a twelve year old tree that was bigger than him. There wasa 115 year old tree and a 250 year old one too. Later we saw a robin sitting on the branch singing. Next we looked at the holly tree. All down the side it is prickly and on top it is is not. Soon we went into a hut and Ger got our teacher Ms Coogan's chain and held it and it went around in a circle because of the energy of the water. Sooner or later we went for another little walk and we saw two grey squirrels up in a tree. We went inside and had our lunch and we looked at a nettle and a butterfly under the microscope, it was brillant. We got on the bus at 12.30pm and went to the Hill of Tara, we looked into the tomb and big trenches. The best bit of all was looking through the microscope. It was agreat day. I learned lots of new things.

When I Die

When I die,

I hope to fly like a pretty butterfly.

When I die,

I hope to sing like the pretty birds in the sky.

But I don't mind,

What I am,

I am me,

And you are you,

And that's ok with me.
